Best wireless earbuds with noise cancellation

Why you should consider buying wireless earbuds with noise cancellation?

Before answering this, we must know about noise cancellation and why is it important.

What is noise cancellation in earbuds?

Noise cancellation, as the name suggests, it is a process of cancelling all the surrounding noise and providing you will only the needed sound that is music.

It is a great feature to have as it may take your entertainment to another level.

Noise cancellation removes all the disturbances from the surrounding and make the sound clear for you.

Advantages of noise cancellation in wireless earbuds

A wireless earbud is a tiny piece of gadget that can be placed in your ear to listen to music. It comes with speakers in it which produce sound.

When we get a technology like noise cancellation in wireless earbuds, it adds a lot of convenience.

Being small, you would be able to carry the earbuds in your pocket easily and listen to music.

Carry a large over the ear headphones is hard, and a wireless earbud solves the issue.

Noise cancellation makes the ear bud to deliver a much better sound output.

If you are a music lover, then you should definitely consider getting a wireless earbud with noise cancellation.

Types of noise cancellation

Noise cancellation can be classified into two types

  • Passive noise cancellation
  • Active noise cancellation

Both are good, but if you need the true music listening experience then wireless earbuds with active noise cancellation is the way to go.

What is Passive noise cancellation?

This feature is seen in budget segment earbuds.

Passive noise cancellation does not include any technology or hardware to support it.

It is achieved by the design of the wireless earbuds.

To support passive noise cancellation, brands like Noise or Boat add an ear tip that stops all the external noise and also the earbud is designed in such a way that it blocks the sound from outside.

In my experience, this is a hit or miss feature. I tried many earbuds with passive noise cancellation and in some cases they performed well, but mostly they were just ok.

We can notice the issue with the external sound creeping in when we travel in a train or a bus.

The external sounds can be heard clearly when we are outside in public with a lot of people around use.

Best case scenario for Passive noise cancellation is when we listen to music inside a room or in a place where there are fewer people around us.

As a solution for this, we need to consider getting earbuds with active noise cancellation.

What is Active noise cancellation?

This technology provides a much better music listening experience.

Active noise cancellation, is a combination of reducing the external noise passively using the design and also with some specific hardware inside the earbuds.

Every earbud with Active noise cancellation would have multiple microphones in it, which would detect the sound coming from outside and cancels it.

Due to the tight fit and the cancellation of sounds using the microphones, you would get a clear sound from the song that you are listening to.

How did we create this list of active noise cancellation earbuds?

We tested through various kinds of earbuds from different brands like Sony, Apple, Jabra, JBL and Sennheiser to make this list.

10 different model of ANC earbuds were considered and 5 were selected which performed really well in our testing.

There were a few criteria set to make this list

  • Calibration of sound output
  • Bass level
  • How is the noise cancellation
  • Battery life
  • Features on offer
  • Price to performance ratio

After checking all these aspects we came to a decision and the list was created so that if you are planning to buy one this list would help.

Earbuds with ANC usually come with a premium price tag, so if you need the best experience, then keep the price at last.

Huawei Freebuds are new to this segment and in our testing, they performed really well. They are a bit pricey, but you won’t be disappointed with these for sure.

The design of these buds are unique, and the mic is outward facing to better track the surrounding noise and improve the active noise cancellation.

Another Mic is placed in an inward direction to improve the call quality. These design features gave an excellent result when we did calls and also listen to music.

10 mm dynamic drivers provide excellent bass without any disturbance at high volume levels.

Battery life was ok, but not great. In our testing, we got 3.5 hours of continuous playback and 3 hours of talk time.

This was a downfall when compared to the Apple AirPods Pro 2. The case that comes with it can provide 14 hours of battery life, which is good enough for daily commute of a flight trip.

Noise cancellation being our priority here was great in these earbuds. Like the AirPods, we used the Huawei freebuds in places where there was a lot of ambient noise.

The surrounding mics were able to detect those noise and reduce them.

With a pop-up action, you will be able to easily grab on the earbuds while you are travelling.

When ever the top flap of the case is opened, the earbuds come out, which is a unique and good feature to have.

The case provide info on the battery status, which I felt is better than the AirPods Pro.

Pros

  • Durable design
  • Good noise cancellation
  • Fast charging support is an advantage
  • Sleek looks

Cons

  • Battery life is less
  • Price is a bit high

They have a variety of models in Indian market and the Elite 7 is one of the best. Due to its durable design and good sound, we considered it in this list.

The quietcomfort series from Bose are one of the best-selling noise-cancelling wireless earbuds that you can buy.

Charging speed was also slower compared to other earbuds in this segment.

One thing which is great with this wireless earbuds is the Bluetooth range and also the sound quality.

Bass came out excellent and lows and mid were great. It was a treat for the ears while listening to music through these buds.

Pros

  • Durable design
  • Good ANC support
  • Excellent sound output

Buyer’s Guide for ANC earbuds

AS a buyer’s guide, let me explain the above-mentioned points in detail.

Calibration of sound output

This is a criteria that is dependent on various factors. It would determine how the earbuds generate vocals and how clear is the actual sound coming out of it.

Also, we checked at what volumes there could be any cracking in sound and if there is any issue with the drivers at high volumes.

Another thing that we considered here are the lows and mid. How the earbud manages the sound in different scenarios and type of music played.

Usually with wireless earbuds, we have noticed as the lows are not managed well, and we can clearly notice the difference when we tried various brands.

Bass level

For all you Bass lovers, it is a thing that you may look for when you plan to buy earbuds.

With small size and minimum hardware, achieving a desired bass level is difficult. Premium segment wireless earbuds are good in this aspect.

If you are searching for a wireless earphone with noise cancellation and good bass, then consider expensive earbuds.

Budget segment earbuds are good at low volumes, but as soon as we increase the volume to high levels, we can hear cracking or distortions.

A normal person may not consider it, but people who need the best would not feel great listening to music like that.

It actually depends on the quality of the driver and the rating of it.

Low rated drivers may not be able to handle the bass levels in the music and start to distort the sound.

This is an important factor to consider if you are planning to buy an earbud with noise cancellation.

How is the noise cancellation

Of course, this is the major point to consider here while testing an earbud.

As we are looking into ANC earbuds, we should check, how the ambient noise is filtered and how much can you hear.

To test this we travelled though the busy streets with a lot of people and also in train.

Some ANC earbuds performed really well as they were able to remove all the outside noise and only the sound from the song that we were playing was heard.

Others were good enough, but in densely populated areas and traffic jams, the ambient noise came through. It was not as bad as a passive noise cancellation buds, but still it is a point to be noted.

Battery life of the wireless earbud

This is another important factor to consider. Being small, manufactures cannot put in a large battery inside.

When it is connected to Bluetooth of your phone, the battery is used, and also it depends on the volume that you are listening to music.

Every wireless earbud comes with a case where it is stores. The case has its own battery inside which charges the buds as well.

In our experience, earbuds from Apple and Sony performed really well in this department.

An average of 3 to 4 hours of playback would be good, and the case can charge the earbuds easily.

While planning to buy a wireless earbud, we need to give a high priority to the battery life that it offers.

When you commute or take a flight, you may listen to music. In that case, the earbud should last long enough until you reach the destination.

Features on offer

When it comes to wireless earbuds, not many additional features can be expected, but still there are a few that can come handy.

Apple AirPods offer find my feature, which will help you to track the earbuds easily if you forget it somewhere or lose it.

Another feature that could be a great addition is the wireless charging.

Earbuds from Samsung, Apple, Sony and Jabra support wireless charging using the case that comes with the earbuds.

It is handy when you travel and also at home. We just need to place the earbuds on a Qi enabled charger, and it would charge the buds and the case.

Price to performance ratio

This is the deciding factor for your purchase. What ever product you buy, it should perform well.

When it comes to wireless earbuds with ANC, we expect them to provide the best sound output in a manageable price.

As I mentioned earlier, to get the best sound output from a wireless earbud, we much consider getting an expensive one.

With 100’s of brands available in the market, it is a hard job to find the one that performs well and also suit your wallet.

Though this post, I am trying to solve this issue for you.
