How to enable end-to-end encryption of chat backup on WhatsApp
The process is simple, and the setting is built in to the WhatsApp application in both Android and iOS. Before starting with the process, you must make sure that there is a chat backup present for your previous chats. Creating a chat backup will always help to get back your data if your phone is lost or switched.
To turn on Chat Backup on WhatsApp, Open WhatsApp > Click on “Settings” at the bottom bar > Click on “Chats” in the settings page > Click “Chat Backup” button > Click “Turn on Chat Backup”.
There are additional settings here like the duration of backup like daily, weekly or monthly. Select the option and the chats will be automatically backed up.

Enable end-to-end encryption of chat backup
- Open WhatsApp
- Click on Settings button on the bottom bar.
- Click on “Chats” button and then click on “Chat Backup”.
- At the bottom part of the page there will be an option called “End-to-end Encrypted Backup”.
- By default, this option will be “Off” Click on it and turn it “ON”
- Once you click on it, you will be shown with a prompt to add a Password for backtup.
- Either provide a password or use a 64 digit encryption key.
- Once the password is added, your backup will be encrypted.
WhatsApp will be regularly asking for the encryption password for your Chat Backup when ever you reinstall the app or change phones.
